Manchester United have completed the signing of Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha from Wolves in a £62.5m deal, making him the first signing of the Ruben Amorim era at Old Trafford. The 26-year-old joins on a five-year contract with an option for an additional year, as United move quickly to reshape their squad following a disappointing 15th-place Premier League finish.
United triggered Cunha’s release clause, which was inserted into his Wolves contract in January, and agreed to a three-instalment payment structure running until 2027. The deal avoids the risk of a prolonged transfer saga, with both clubs eager to conclude business early in the window. Despite interest from Arsenal, Aston Villa, and Saudi clubs, Cunha was clear in his desire to join United and wasn’t put off by the club’s failure to qualify for the Champions League. Sources close to the player said he “loves United” and was determined to make the move happen.
Cunha enjoyed his best Premier League season in 2024/25, scoring 17 goals and registering six assists in 33 appearances. He’s expected to slot into a No.10 role under Amorim’s 3-4-3 system, where his ability to travel with the ball, create chances, and finish will be key. United have been following Cunha since his standout performance against them at Old Trafford on the opening day of the 2023/24 season and believe he fits perfectly into their new tactical setup.
Gary Neville called the transfer a “statement” and said Cunha’s style suits the gaps left by players like Sancho, Antony, and Rashford, all of whom could leave this summer. While Cunha is known for his flair and creativity, some analysts warn he can be unpredictable, which may pose challenges in a structured pressing system. Still, with United looking to regain attacking spark, his signing brings much-needed freshness and excitement to a team in transition.
